Key Personnel
Lee Coates - Director
Lee has worked in the financial services industry since 1982, providing guidance on financial planning since setting up an independent financial advice company, Ethical Investors Group, in 1989. Lee established Ethical Screening with Mike Head (see below) in 1997, initially to provide screening services to clients of his financial advice company. He is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute; a Member of the Society of Financial Advisers; and an Associate of the Institute of Financial Planning.
In addition to his directorial responsibilities Lee uses his position within the ethical investment industry to build and develop relationships with other investment professionals. His regular contact with investors and industry insiders enables us to maintain our understanding of their needs and focus our services on issues that are relevant to them. Lee is currently Chair of the Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility.
Gerard Llewellyn - Head of Research
Gerard has environmental bachelor and masters degrees and a background in environmental research. Before joining Ethical Screening he worked as a research assistant in the Environmental Impact Assessment Unit at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth, and as a researcher at Jupiter Asset Management investigating companies for inclusion in their green investment funds.
Gerard has been with Ethical Screening since it was established in 1997 researching and analysing companies, screening client portfolios and developing our research methods and our private, charity and institutional client services.
Emma Robertson - Research and Relationship Management
Emma graduated from Bath University in 2005 with a research degree in International Management and Modern Languages and is fluent in German. After undertaking an internship at The Ecologist magazine where she researched and analysed marketing strategies and reports, Emma joined Ethical Screening as a researcher and helped the team develop their research management systems and methodology.
Emma’s roles include researching and analysing corporate activities and social responsibility issues; research management; and client screening services. She is also responsible for client relationship management.
Juliana Burden - Researcher
Juliana has a BSc. (Hons) in Environmental Science and a Diploma in Advanced French from Brighton University, alongside a MSc. in International Development from Bath University. Before joining Ethical Screening in 2007, she worked at the Countryside Commission and in the Energy Team at Wessex Water.
Whilst studying at Bath, Juliana completed a six-month research placement in Huancayo, Peru, where she investigated opportunities for sustainable management of water resources in the Central Peruvian highlands. Her special interests include the impacts of mining operations on local communities and environmental resources with a particular focus on South America.
At Ethical Screening, Juliana’s role involves research and analysis of corporate activities in order to provide information for private, charity and institutional clients.
Raechel Kelly - Researcher
Raechel graduated in 2006 with an honours degree in English Language and Literature from University College London. She has a young family, which has reinforced her interest in ethical issues and sustainability, where she is particularly interested in issues relating to food sourcing, consumer products and supply chains; areas that are a key focus of her work.
Raechel joined Ethical Screening in 2008 as part of the research team and her role involves researching and analysing corporate activities and the day-to-day management of information to ensure that our databases remain up-to-date.
Danielle Wilson - Researcher
Danielle has an MSc. in Environmental Technology from Imperial College and a BSc. (Hons) in Geography from the University of Nottingham. Danielle has completed a number of internships where she undertook research into companies’ environmental activities, government and corporate sustainability targets, and legislative and sustainability assessment tools relating to property development.
Danielle joined Ethical Screening in February 2009 as part of the research team. Her role involves research and analysis of corporate activities; management of information to ensure that our databases remain up-to-date; and management and maintenance of data relating to our Ethical Funds Database.

Mike’s roles within Ethical Screening include the innovation and development of new products and services. His day-to-day contacts with investors and their managers are invaluable in keeping our services relevant to those who use them.
